How often should you see an orthodontist?
Treatment with a fixed brace normally means having to see the orthodontist every 4-6 weeks whereas with removable braces this is extended to once every 12 weeks. Treatment with fixed braces is generally more intensive but is considerably quicker and more effective (for the patients) than treatment with a removable brace. But, for the orthodontists, it is exactly the other way around because of the antiquated German reimbursement system: removable braces are far more lucrative than fixed braces – it does not require much imagination to realise that this fact has a much greater effect on orthodontics in Germany than any amount of scientific knowledge.
During their training at university clinics, orthodontists usually ask to see the patients every four weeks. But in modern orthodontics such a strict monitoring regime is simply not necessary. The clever orthodontists generally see their patients less.
