Brackets are small pivots that are stuck onto the teeth and are used to put the teeth under tension using orthodontic wires. Brackets are the universal standard for fixed orthodontic devices. Brackets that are stuck on have been used in orthodontics since 1970 and have largely superseded the tapes that were used previously. These brackets have been continuously improved and they make the dentist’s job a lot easier because there are now special brackets for every single tooth (programming, straight-wire technology) and self-ligating devices which remove the need for the time-consuming job of fixing orthodontic wires with elastic or wire ligatures. In spite of this, a certain amount of manual skill is still required in order to work successfully with brackets.
