‚Dental brace‘ is a layman’s term for an orthodontic appliance. Orthodontists prefer to talk about orthodontic hardware or appliances. However, since the term dental brace is so widely used and is understood by everyone, this is the term that will be generally used on this site.
In the broadest sense of the word, any appliance is called a dental brace if it is used by orthodontists to either move or somehow influence the teeth. There are both removable and fixed braces. However, removable braces, with a few exceptions, are now mainly obsolete, because most orthodontic treatment can be carried out more quickly and effectively using fixed braces. These are also more comfortable for the patient and, last but not least, they are better value for money.
